So what? We played a hell of a game on Saturday, against a ranked opponent and we played them to a standstill. 3 big plays against us. 1 special teams mistake and 2 defensive coverages. Over all not a bad performance.
That will end the downside of the program...
What we have to look forward to in the coming weeks is that Roy Helu has ARRIVED in a BIG way. VT has a great run defense and our O-line opened up holes that Helu's skinny ass fit right through. Coming around the ends with a head of steam he laid out some punishment for being tackled. That was awesome to see. Lucky would seem to fall anytime he got hit. Nice to see a back give out punishment as well as taking it.
Lee didn't have a career day, but he managed the game fairly well for a first year starter. I think that his maturity on and off the field will allow significant growth in his performance on the field. If the receivers can get their hands around the ball and make a few catches, Lee can get it to where it needs to go and keep the team on the right track.
How about Alex Henery! There was a bit of difficulty in getting the ball from Center to him on punts, but he seemed to kick better on the run! 70+ yards kicking Rugby style! That was awesome! 5 field goals, while Extra Points would have been nicer, was a great accomplishment too.
I think that the team got screwed in the polls, dropping 5-6 points for being an underdog and losing by 1 point is ridiculous. With as many ranked teams that have been getting beaten by unranked opponents only dropping by that amount, just shows what homers the AP really is. I'm glad that their poll is not used in the BCS.
Overall, I think that the game was a good measuring stick for the program. A win would have been HUGE, but a loss by a single point was just as poignant. The Huskers proved that they can play with the Big Boys and make them Earn any victory from us. The Huskers proved that Bo's system works, once again. And that Coming Soon to a BCS Championship near you... WILL feature the Huskers returning to the Dominance that they so deserve.
